Occasionally we receive comments that we express an incomplete and one-sided view of Romania's history - this is true, these pages are to give a basic insight into only the problems that gave rise to the streetchildren.

There are other, better sides of Romania's fine history which can be found on history sites

Romania was once considered "the bread basket of Europe". Rich, fertile farmlands produced abundant crops.

It is now known as the "land of the orphans".

This is largely due to it's former ruthless dictator, Ceausescu, and his wife
  • Ceausescu wanted to rule over a large nation

  • Ceausescu wanted each woman to have at least five children

  • Ceausescu outlawed any form of birth control in younger women

The 'history' and 'suffering' pages were written by Dr I Hovarth, a romanian national and a lecturer on social studies, who grew up through the troubled times
